Flood Advisory issued September 12 at 11:50AM MDT until September 12 at 3:00PM MDT by NWS Grand Junction CO
AREAS AFFECTED: Garfield, CO
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Hydrologic flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of northwest Colorado, including the following county, Garfield. * WHEN...Until 300 PM MDT. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. A mudslide over Highway 139 south of Douglas Pass is on going or expected to begin shortly. Avoid traveling and recreating through the advisory area. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 1149 AM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly south of Douglas Pass on CO Hwy 139. Between 0.5 and 0.8 inches of rain have fallen. - Douglas Pass and CO Hwy 139 is the most likely place to experience minor flooding. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.3 to 0.5 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
INSTRUCTION: Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Highway 139 is prone to rockslides and mudslides in heavy rain. Stay alert for rocks and debris on roads, and avoid driving on flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

A fractus cloud (scud) is a fragmented, tattered cloud which has
likely been sheared off of another cloud. They are accessory clouds, meaning they
develop from parent clouds, and are named in a way which describes the original
cloud which contained them.
Fractus clouds which have originated from cumulus clouds are referred to as
cumulus fractus, while fractus clouds which have originated from stratus clouds
are referred to as stratus fractus. Under certain conditions a fractus cloud might
merge with another cloud, or develop into a cumulus cloud, but usually a
fractus cloud seen by itself will dissipate rapidly.
They are often observed on the leading and trailing edges of storm clouds,
and are a display of wind activity.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.
