Winter Storm Warning issued February 18 at 2:58AM MST until February 19 at 5:00AM MST by NWS Salt Lake City UT
AREAS AFFECTED: Wasatch Mountains I-80 North; Wasatch Mountains South of I-80; Western Uinta Mountains
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy snow. Total snow accumulations between 1 and 2 feet with locally higher accumulations up to 30 inches across the upper Cottonwoods. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph. * WHERE...The Wasatch Mountains, and Western Uinta Mountains. * WHEN...Until 5 AM MST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Winter driving conditions can be expected on all mountain routes. Traction restrictions are likely. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A period of heavy snow is expected between roughly 12 PM to 5 PM, with snowfall rates generally 1 to 2 inches per hour likely, except exceeding 2 inches per hour in the Upper Cottonwoods. Northwesterly flow prevailing behind a frontal passage will result in lingering showers through the end of the day Wednesday.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles
a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.
In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly
in the Midwest and eastern regions.
While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form
under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds
warn that severe weather is close.

Precipitation can refer to many different forms of water that
may fall from clouds. Precipitation occurs after a cloud has become saturated to
the point where its water particles are more dense than the air below the cloud.
In most cases, precipitation will reach the ground, but it is not uncommon for
precipitation to evaporate before it reaches the earth's surface.
When precipitation evaporates before it contacts the ground it is called Virga.
Graupel, hail, sleet, rain, drizzle, and snow are forms of precipitation, but fog
and mist are not considered precipitation because the water vapor which
constitutes them isn't dense enough to fall to the ground.
