AREAS AFFECTED: Inland Berkeley

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Freezing Fog Advisory, areas of freezing fog. For the Lake Wind Advisory on Lake Moultrie, northwest winds 15 to 20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots and waves 1 to 2 feet expected. * WHERE...Inland Berkeley County. * WHEN...For the Freezing Fog Advisory, until 8 AM EST this morning. For the Lake Wind Advisory, from 7 PM this evening to 1 PM EST Saturday. * IMPACTS...Strong winds and rough waves on Lake Moultrie will create hazardous conditions for small craft. Areas of freezing fog could make driving conditions hazardous. Light icing could occur on elevated surfaces such as trees, cars and fences. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The highest winds and waves will occur across the central and southeast portions of the lake.

INSTRUCTION: Boaters on Lake Moultrie should use extra caution since strong winds and rough waves can overturn small craft. If driving, slow down and remain alert for slick spot, especially on elevated roadways such as bridges and overpasses.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to their surface.

Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation similar to situations which produce snowfall.

Hole Punch Clouds Next Topic: Mammatus Clouds

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.
